Yikes! What Have I Gotten Myself Into?

Lori is hosting a Wardrobe Basics sew-along. I decided, on a whim, mind you, to join.

I really need to do this. It doesn't seem daunting as the plan is already laid out for me.

1. Slim Black Pants (on the segment they called these ponte pants)
2. Dark Skinny Jeans
3. White button shirt
4. Black turtleneck
5.Camel - khaki skirt
6.Tie Waist Sweater
7. Puffy Vest
8. Faux Fur Vest
9. Black Dress
10. Riding Boot
11. Black patent pumps
12. tights
Now we cannot sew 10, 11 and 12 but we can sew the first 9, so let's get started with those items.

Most SWAPs seem overwhelming. This keeps things so simple that I might actually accomplish it within a reasonable time frame. And I'm sewing everything from my stash. Other than changing the style of some of the items, I will stick with the plan as stated. I do need a substitute for the puffy vest though. Any suggestions? Why don't you join us?

I've had this pattern marinating in my stash since it first came out. I bought it thinking the low rise styling would save me the hassle of doing any alterations. The fabric (purchased several years ago) is a denim weight cotton, that I planned on making some sort of topper with. This is Naimah, one of my teachers and I'm going to her performance tonight. My girlfriends say I am too dressed up when we go out. So I'm compromising with this outfit. LOL.

Though the finished measurements are on the tissue, I cut my regular size, giving me enough seam allowances to alter. I did not make a sway back adjustment (I should have).

The pattern has two lines for cutting out the back piece. I use the outside line, but after taking the pants in almost four inches, I realized I should have used the inside cutting line (I've since made a note on the envelope). Since there are no darts, shaping comes from the back and side seam allowances, and the two piece waistband-which I removed because, it came up too high on my waist. I used a strip of leftover fabric to make a facing which I turned in and stitch down. The zip placket didn't lay flat at the top, so I inserted a tab (4th photo), stitched on a snap (spray painted gold) as the solution. I wish I had made a bias facing for the waist, (the brain cells were out to lunch) because that may have help with the gaposis, I'm experiencing in the back. A sway back adjustment would have help as well. But since I'll wear my shirts out, my "smalls" won't be on display whenever I bend down. I did taper the leg from hip to knee because I wanted a closer fit. Overall, I love these pants! They sit right on my navel, don't cut off the blood circulation in my thighs and the length and width cover my shoes. I hiked them up in the 3rd photo so you can get an idea of the width. I should have taken a better photo so you could see that but the resident photographer was still half awake when he took these. BTW-stained toe nail is a result of Vixen nail polish.

You can be better dressed when you own a lot of stuff. You see someone looking fantastic, and you say Ah yes, she knew just the sweater, belt scarf to buy to put that look together. Probably not true! She very likely did it with the stuff she already owns plus a little of it is new. When I read this book years ago, I was in the military, prior to that I was in parochial school. There were few times that civilian clothing and accessories were needed in my wardrobe. But on travels I've accumulated quite a collection of bits and baubles. All of which I love. I joined in on Toy's Accessory Hop, hoping to have an Autumn accessory story to share with you. I thought about it all week but couldn't narrow it down. Depending on my mood, I'll grab anything off the wall (the necklaces are hanging by thumbtacks on one wall in my bedroom!) Toss on a belt, an armful of bracelets, step into pumps/booties/boots and finish off with earrings and a gele (always!).

If I did these post right, this is third in the trio and should be at the very top of the blog. And it should be Saturday.

HGB says when buying accessories, it can't be junk. The quality must be okay. I bought the Duchess of Windsor set (there's a fancy name for this. Anyone know what it is?) and the carnelian and pearl necklaces from Avon over 20 years ago. I often shop street fairs and hair shows for pieces made with cowries and have no issue visiting Rugged Warehouse for a current trendy piece. And I love Avenue for large scale beauties! You just have to have a keen eye. For smaller pairs of earrings, I bought one of those multiple drawer units that is usually filled with screws and kept in the garage. These earrings are too large for it. Some are on the wall. But I think I need to do this. What a cool idea!

A basket of gloves that I keep near the front door. And some of my neutral shoes. When in doubt go with a nude shoe. When it's gloomy outside, I like to add a flower pin. Cheers me up.

Violet UFO

Where have I been? I had taken so ill the beginning of September that it required a stay in the hospital. I'm on the mend now and have been catching up with my fellow sewistas. Today I'm wearing a UFO that has been years in the making. I don't remember the pattern number, but it was before I got a serger, because the seams have a zigzag finish. I fell in love with this vibrant corduroy, bought several yards to make a casual sort of suit (can you say, Barney?) and didn't complete it. As you can see, I even installed the zip and just have to put in the sleeves. After seeing Erica and Mimi turn out such amazingly, coloured trousers, I decided to finish these up. Only a hem was needed! The orange top was my first adventure with a serger. All rolled hems on a soft knit. Again, I don't know the pattern number. The jacket is a thrift store find from years ago. It's a Peony Brand. The closures are amazing and it's completely reversible! Since narrow trousers are currently in vogue, I dug through my stash and came up with these patterns. The hem widths ranges from 10" to 15". I might put some of them for sale in my shop. I'll decide this weekend. Net-A-Porter is my favourite place to "shop" for inspiration. I'm loving this dress by Preen. Actually, I love the entire line. I've cleaned up and organized my sewing room and am ready to get to work on my fall/winter wardrobe. I've got a few more UFO's to complete as well. Maybe, I'll get those done first. Yeah, right! BTW-click on photos to enlarge.

So Faye has me on a roll. I may as well take advantage of this downtime and get some fast, easy personal sewing done. This is my fifth dress. Yeah me! I purchased this fabric from Melody a few years ago. I used a small amount when I made M6069 last year (I made it so the cowl can be worn either in the front or the back) and knew I wanted some sort of wrap dress from the rest. S2369 fit the bill especially after seeing some wonderful versions on Pattern Review. Basically, it's a pullover dress styled as a mock wrap. The front overlay curves and sits at the waist for flattery and control. It has two-piece raglan sleeves of which I cut four. I don't know about anyone else, but hemming a bias/curved sleeve in a knit is a PITA! I could use some sort of fusible stabilizer but the finish would not be a neat.

This pattern has gotten a lot of rave reviews. I did sew view A in a Fauxsoni knit two years ago. I still wear it. I needed, okay wanted, a dress for the girls luncheon yesterday. My neighbour brought this fabric back from Bulgaria last year. I promised her I would do it justice. I chose view E. There was barely enough to work with. I cut the skirt back a bit smaller than the front and used JetSet for the contrast and the lining.

Poor Z! I need to recover her. It's been almost 30 years since we've been together.

Bunny, I think it was your site that I got the double sleeve technique from. Your blog is one I reference all the time for different techniques. Can I commission you for a bag? The Noriko is my fav.

I'm following Eugenia's lead. This pattern is what summer sewing is all about; fast, easy and flattering. I don't see anything wrong with sewing it up repeatedly. Here's the first one. I made two more this weekend. Maybe I'll do another in a solid. Maybe I'll actually use the fabric I earmarked for this pattern when I first purchased it. But then maybe not. I bore easily, but I need new clothes. How can one be a seamstress and have nothing to wear?

Faye is hosting "Stay Cool-Stitch Up A Dress" I needed something to cleanse my palette after completing a humongous wardrobe project that consisted of almost for 40 pieces. When I disappear, I'm still sewing but not for myself. The challenge/sew along is what I definitely needed. The tough part was deciding what to do first. I put out a call for help in deciding on a pattern. And I added a few more patterns to my already overloaded queue. Tanya suggested I pick one and go. That's where S2580 comes in. This dress sews up in about two hours! That includes laying out the pattern, marking and cutting. I bought this fabric from Fabric Mart a few years ago and it had been marinating in my stash. That pattern I had when it first came out and has some wonderful reviews on PR. I didn't have to do a FBA. There is plenty of ease in the design. Check the tissue for the finished measurements. The empire line fell in the right place below the bust. I cut a size 12 for the top and size ten for the skirt. I cut out four sleeves and stitched them together at the hem line because I wanted the finishing to be clean. I could have lengthen the hem by another inch. As it is right night, I'll use .25 SAS to complete it.

Unfortunately, it seems to be an acceptable thing to say, without understanding the full weight it carries. There are organizations that pride themselves on using this outdated phrase. Put me in a box and classify me because of the colour of my skin! Really? Answer this, if I didn't have "colour", would I be "colourless"? Would I be any less human? Less creative? Less loving? Less compassionate? Am I really so different from you? Why would you think so? Does describing me as a woman of colour really help you understand who I truly am? But then again, I must keep in mind, that you may not be really interested. Ah, there's the rub.

Sorry, this isn't such a great photo. I just had a co-worker snap it. This is first pair of khakis I have ever owned. I wanted them wide legged, high waisted and made from fabric with some stretch in it. These are Butterick 5221. They pretty much fit out of the envelope-though I should have done a short waist adjustment. I interfaced the fly area and used twill tape around the pockets. I should have interfaced the pants pocket area and made the pocket bag a bit bigger. But all in all, I am pretty satisfied with them. And I can wear them with all of my tops.

Okay, not quite. But these are the colours of Hermes which is what I thought of when I bought the jacket a while ago. Yes, I am still building a wardrobe around the juicy thrifted item. Faye hosted an Over The Top Challenge which is now the Bottoms Up Challenge. Stay tuned for another partner to this blouse.

The facing wouldn't stay down/in on this silky print, so I sewed on the beads. I am not thrilled with the hemming on the ruffle. I couldn't get it narrow enough, so I made the stitching prominent by running it through the serger again with the blade down. This is how I'm wearing it today. Yes, without my orange "winkle-pickers". Love them.

Stash Reduction

Thrifted Jacket & Mini-Wardrobe Contest

I bought this fully-lined wool jacket for $5 in December. It's very well made. And the fit is fabulous. I fell in love with it. But let's be realistic. It's orange! So PR is having another contest. I think I can do this.

It runs from March 1 through March 31, 2011.
This is a contest to create a 5-piece wardrobe in 4 weeks. Four of these pieces must be sewn during the contest period. The 5th piece should be something that your already own. It can be a neutral item or a hard-to-match item that needs help getting incorporated into your daily wear.
These 5 items must combine to make a minimum of 6 different outfits.
Example: 2 bottoms & 3 tops. Each top matches both bottoms. This give 6 outfits.
Example: 2 bottoms, 2 tops, & a topper (eg, a shrug). Each top matches both bottoms, & the topper goes with all. This gives 8 outfits.

I think the jacket qualifies as a hard to match item.

Review is here. I purchased the vintage jackets in NYC in the 80's. I think they are from the late 30's, early 40's. I'll take a photo of the labels and perhaps someone can help me accurately date them. The brown one has the original buttons even though I think a minor repair had been since one of the buttons is a tad smaller than the other. I think a drink and dinner will be involved if you get that close to me to find out which one it is. The blouse were thrifted about ten years ago. It has a draped neckline and I love the colours. It cost about two greenbacks at the time!

Yes, I know it' s been a long while since I've last posted.

But I promise (kinda, sorta)that, in 2011, I'll do better.

I've got a lot of goals for this year. First off a tally:

Fabric in: 144.75 yds. Fabric out: 90 yds. This does not include the three trash bags full of fabric that was donated to my local thrift store. My niece estimated the yardage in my home to be in the high 4-digits. Looks like I'm back to stash busting.

Last September, Zoe, hosted Self-Stitched September. Needless to say, I didn't like much of anything I wore and therefore didn't post any photos. This resulted in a majour closet cleanout. Five trashbags of clothing and two bags of shoes and handbags were donated to various local thrift stores and charity. I realized I had "outgrown" most of clothing. Not size, but the style. As I am about to enter a new decade of my life, I want to be less boho and more sleek. So I am embarking on Building a Lifetime Wardrobe with Sarah and Jacki. I need to create things that I will love for a while. I'm not really interested in sewing items that will last 10 or 20 years, but I still want well-made items in my wardrobe. And I want things that coordinate. Work with each other. Match. I do NOT own a white blouse. Why not? It's the one item that would pull so many of my orphans together. I've joined Barbara on the Never Too Many White Shirts Project. I've also signed up for the Stitchers Guild 12 in 2011. Jackets, that is. They don't have to be tailored, nor do they have to be an actual jacket. Just a topper of some sort. One item a month. Should be doable, right? I've got the first one cut out. It's part of my self-imposed SWAPs. More on that later.

My goal this year, is to sew a number of items that I love by my birthday. Regan created 32 Things. As for my number of items, I'll let you know when I'm getting close. There are a lot of sew-alongs taking place. So I am bound to find any information I may need should a problem arise. Perhaps, I'll learn a new way of doing something. Sunni is hosting a trouser sew-along; Gertie is currently running the Crepe sew-along. A few months ago, she hosted the Lady Grey sew-along. Cennetta, Caroline and Erica are stitching up wonderful creations and Em is re-doing her entire wardrobe. She was ruthless when going through her closet and streamlined her sewing projects down to a few dynamic colours and a great combination of classic, trendy and vintage styles. Peter is in a class all by himself. I truly enjoy his work. He's both fierce and fearless. Love him! Lori has sewn some wonderful handbags. She's also an enabler. LOL. I love to see what Sharon is doing. It's usually the latest pattern done in a fresh and funky way. I always appreciate her sewing tips. Trena, Faye, and Carol have done such amazing amount of sewing. I would take Carol's wardrobe if given the chance.

Okay, I think I've blathered on enough. Did I mention I am also participation in the Vintage SewAlong hosted by Joann. if you love vintage, check out Debi and Steph. I'll need your help deciding which pattern to work on.

Well, it seems I am going to have a very busy year. I look forward to seeing what everyone else is doing and reducing my stash.

Buttons-part of the giveaway

My friend's grandfather used to be a tailor. She cleaned out the attic and gave my four large freezer bags of buttons. I am still sorting through them. She gave me the button filled cookie tin. I don't think I'll need to buy buttons for the rest of my life! The items to the left of the second photo are not studs! They're buttons! I am particular about the silver crested buttons. And I love the green crested ones. (first photo). They don't seem to be made from nickel, but sterling silver (last photo). I am having them checked out. Check out the motif on the silver button in the photo with the amber buttons. It looks like an Egyptian charioteer! Some of these will be part of the upcoming giveway.

It's the last day of the black out challenge. If you don't wear black, this may have been easy for you. I had some difficulty as I chose to not wear even black accessories. Every year, I promise to toss this skirt out. It's made from OOP M4783. The waist is a tad to big and I am not sure about the length. But she keeps resurfacing. Today, I piled on a massive amount of silver jewelry. The sandals, I spray painted an hour before leaving the house. Thanks goodness for quick drying craft paint. But I do recommend that you let things thoroughly cure for at least 24 hours.

Still No Black-Refashion of Sorts

Wednesday's outfit was brown and pink with accessories of amber and bronze. The skirt was a long wrap skirt I had made two summers ago. The I was able to re-work it into an A-line and still keep the border print. Look closely, my son glued on blue "jewels" for a little pop.
Today, I wanted to wear orange. I love this top. It's of the few retail purchases that I have no regrets about buying. Bought several years ago, when orange wasn't in fashion, it has served me well. I am wearing it with a skirt that I made from a tablecloth I found in a thrift store last year. I love the print and the cottony texture. This is another item that will work with a sage green top. (I found the fabric in my stash, after all)
Last night, I went to Joann's to meet a client. After discussing business, she presented me with a $25 gift card. This fabric cost $22 for 4.5 yards. Another maxi dress is in my future. I do have a few things on my "lust" list that I may go back for. We'll see. I am placing a small order with Fabric.com. They have free shipping with a purchase of $35 or more. No, that does not mean free fabric as Trena thought, so I won't get carried away. LOL. I am just going to take advantage of their clearance fabrics. Plain colours, some basics. You know, just to cleanse the palate.

I didn't realize how hard working a simple beige top could be. I really wanted to wear this skirt with a sage green top. But I have every other shade of green except sage. Even ode green would have been acceptable. As I was going through my closet, I realized I have two other skirts that would work with a sage green top as well. I guess I have to go fabric shopping. But only for 1.5 yds. of sage green knit fabric. I promise I will not be tempted. I will stay focused.

Today is the second day of wearing no black. It's not as difficult as it may seem, since like Carol, I always have prints, some other eclectic mix going on. But my wardrobe is seriously lacking in the basics. Like a white shirt! I need to add that to my list of things to sew. ASAP! It may be time to cleanse to palate, so to speak. Reassess my wardrobe. I guess there is something to be said for the building blocks of a true working wardrobe.

This dress, was fast and easy to sew. It does have the potential to be boring and sack like. But if you take the time to draft the pattern more to your shape, I think you'll like it. See review here.

I've joined the PR Wardrobe contest. Yes, again. Maybe this time, I can complete this one. So far, I pulled the fabrics I'll be using. But I done that for every other wardrobe contest I've entered. LOL.

Oh, one more thing. Why not do the Summer Blackout 2010 Challenge. Here are the rules:From Monday, June 7, to Monday, June 14, participants are forbidden to wear black clothes. No black pants, black skirts, black dresses, black shirts, black sweaters, nada. Here are the official rules of play:

Graduation Outfit: KS338, S7082 & NL6470

I always wait until the eleventh hour to complete a project. I knew the date, a month ago, of my son's graduation. I knew what I wanted to make. The vision was so clear in my mind, that the outfit should have sewn itself. I waited until May 27 to pull out the fabric. The ceremony was on May 28. At 8am! I started sewing about 2am. Of course, I couldn't get the blouse finished. The clock was ticking. At 5am, I set aside the blouse (there was no way I was going to set the sleeves, press, yada, yada, yada by 6) and put elastic in the waist and serged the hem of the skirt. I serged the hem of my gele and pulled out my trusty KS Twist Top (3378) I had made earlier in the week. Cowries, makeup and heels on, we were out the door by 6:30! Last night I finished the top. I am determined not to have any UFO's this year. I thought the pattern of the fabric may be "too much" but I love it as is. I am going to make this skirt at least one more time.

I'm still stash busting. I haven't bought any fabric in five months, but several friends have added to my collection. Here's another rendition of the Perfect Dress. I bought six yards of this fabric at Walmart about two years ago and knew then I wanted to make a dress. Yesterday morning, I pulled this out of my stash, determined I was wearing purple. My iron died in the process. I think it's time for a new one anyway. This is the first project I have ever made with out using an iron. But I wore my dress proudly. I did purchase an inexpensive iron last night but Bitter Betty is having a giveaway for one made by Rowenta. Enter for your chance to win this lovely.

I haven't done any personal sewing in ages. I've been making costumes for our upcoming hafla. Here's a few of the harem pants I've done. Each pair was made from fabric I had in my collection. I used about 3.5 yards each. I've made almost 21 costumes pieces and have done several hours worth of alterations to coin bras and belts. My fingers are numb, my eyes are blurry and my back aches. Pattern Description: MISSES'/MISS PETITE DRESSES AND BELT: Close-fitting dresses A, B, C, D, E with waistline seam, neckline variations, back zipper closing and mid-knee lengths; dress A is sleeveless; dress B has cap sleeves with pleats; dresses C, D have three-quarter length sleeves; dress E has long sleeves; dresses C, D, E have tie belt.
Pattern Sizing: BB(8-10-12-14), F5(16-18-20-22-24)
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes
Were the instructions easy to follow?Yes, though I only looked at them for the cowl information.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?No dislikes, except the usage of a zip.
Fabric Used:A slinky knit

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: I lengthened the sleeves, omitted the zip and after the first fitting, realized I could have cut it on a size 8 with room to spare. I also stabilized the waist with black Seams Great I had in my stash. I also added 1.5 inches to the hem.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?Yes &yes.
Conclusion: Easy to sew, takes a couple of hours.

I finished the Stash Sewing Contest with 25 pieces sewn. Even though the contest began on February 1st, I didn't start sewing until the 21st. I've used 43 yards of fabric from my stash. 15 yards of fabric was added to my stash since the beginning of the year but 3 yards are for my headwraps and 6 yards were a gift. I am rather pleased with my restraint. I've signed up for the Mini-Wardrobe Contest and I am hoping to get two wardrobes completed by the Tax Day! And I've also signed up for Faye's Spring Month of Tops. And I've got a few dance costumes to make. Whew! Busy, busy. But my mojo has returned and I am taking full advantage of it. Oh, I almost forgot about the Chanel jacket I am suppose to be working on.

This is a thin "oniony knit" I purchased at Joann's a year ago. Think it's red and white? No, it's actually a dull grey. No worries. I have some grey "pearls" I'll wear with and a grey knit cardigan coat I am currently working on. I'll re-post when I'm finished. This pattern was a dream to work with. One inch seam allowance and a lot of hand holding. If you're fairly confident about your body and the fabric you're working with, then cut it one size smaller than usual. I didn't have to do a full bust adjustment! It's close to be the perfect knit dress.

It all started with the desire for red trousers. Then I remembered Chanel's Deauville style. I wanted something flowy. Soft. I made this pattern before. It has darts on the side (which can be eliminated, btw) and the drape is just right. Then of course, one must have a cardigan. I am not overly thrilled with it worn with the skirt . I also used NL 6735 for the top and, B3392 for the matching skirt. Somehow I developed a mini wardrobe. Yeah me! I wore the matching skirt combo yesterday with the black cardigan from V8435 (I'll post it along with the funky pants I made).

This is the third time I made this dress. It had been a UFO for so long and I had a minor issue with the front wrapover. I really love this version, but once again the Faux-soni beckoned. It looks like a coat, but it's actually a see thru raschel knit. I had to wear a full length slip beneath it.

Pattern Sizing: 4-20. I made size 10

Were the instructions easy to follow? This is the second time I made this, so a cursory glance was all I needed.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I like everything about this pattern: the kimono sleeves, the fitted bodice.
Fabric Used: An ITY from Joann's. I am sure many on PR recognize it.
Pattern Alterations or any design changes you made: Pattern alterations: As far as sizing is concerned, I made no alterations. Size 10 fitted me perfectly. I lengthened the sleeves by four inches and I would have made them longer because I was to full elastic-cased sleeves, had I more material. Perhaps, I'll make cuffs, like on View A instead. I'll have to check the scrap pile. I increased the front bodice by one 1.5 inches and decreased the neck band by 1 inch for a snug fit and no gaping. I used a seam-a-steam on the lower hem and then stitched it.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? Yes and yes! I plan on making Views A and C
Conclusion: This top is a wonderful addition to any wardrobe.

Pattern Description: The Misses' close-fitting pullover tops have twist fronts and deep V-neckline finished with a narrow hem. View A has full-length sleeves. View B has three-quarter length sleeves and is cropped. View C has short sleeves.

Pattern Sizing: I sewed the small

Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? Again, it's the "chicness" of it.
Fabric Used: A "Fauxsoni" knit I purchased at Hancocks ages ago.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: None. The weight of the fabric causes the twist to sit higher than when I used an ITY. The skirt is S4503 ( I think it's OOP). I eliminated the centre front seam, the zip and the darts and inserted an elastic waist. I turned the pieces at a 45 degree angle to get the chevron. If you look closely, the side seams DON'T exactly match. LOL. But you'd have to look really close. I was more concerned with making sure the front and the back pieces matched.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? Maybe. This is the fourth one I've made.
Conclusion: When I purchased this fabric, I thought "chevron". I just envsioned a cute outfit from the 70's. I could have made a dress, but I wanted pieces that would work with other things in my wardrobe

How do you ladies do it? How do you sew and maintain a blog on an almost daily basis? And I know, it's daily, because I visit some of you almost everyday. At home, I don't even think of getting on the computer. My son takes the photos and I post them during my lunch at work or very early before everyone arrives. That's why my reviews are short and sweet. Some of you post to PR as well as maintain your own blogs. I commend you for that. You keep things very interesting and inspire many of us. I love to see what you do.

Okay, so lately, you noticed a rash of activity coming from me. You see, my stash has gotten out of control! When I started this blog I posted photos of the ridiculous amount of cloth I have. Then the local Joann's was closing, and everything was reduced. And all that fabric, notions and yarn needed a nice home. But OMG!!! My house had exploded. I experienced CHAOS! (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome).There is fabric coming out of every available closet or room. I even bought some of those huge storage tubs. I think the fabric propagates while I am asleep. So I've given up sleep for a while, that way I can see what is going on when the lights are turned off. LOL. Well, I've entered the stash contest on PR. By posting here and there I can chronicle what I've done and the yardage I've sewn. Actually, I am sleeping quite well after having completed something. I've even completed a few UFO's. Three more left! I've finished my son's jacket just in time. I cut it out two years ago! He probably won't be able to or want to wear it next year. I'll post those pics next week. I am at a point where my wardrobe needs to freshen up. I want new things.

Coco had pearls, Marilyn had diamonds, Audrey had the LBD, Lagerfeld used to have a fan, now he has Hedi Slimane. For Diane Vreeland it was red and it's big, black sunglasses for Anna Wintour. For me, it's a gele. I guess some would call it "signature style". I prefer to say it's a "style signature", because it's the finalization at the end of your statement. Meaning, your not dressed without it.

I made up the dress Sunday morning to wear that afternoon. In my haste I didn't think about the length since the photo shows the garment at knee length. Well, it came about two inches above my knees. I debated whether I wanted to turn it into a tunic or top. But I was determined to have a dress. So, I cut it about two inches below my bust and inserted the black knit. Now I love it. 'll sew this again. But I want to deepen the cowl.

The coat pattern is OOP. I made this from a tweedy sweater knit I had purchased at Hancocks a while ago. The sweater coat is loose fitting, and has a shawl collar, front princess seams and long sleeves.
When I sew this again, I'll make it longer and the collar bigger so I have a hood.

This is a completed UFO. I inherited the fabric from a client well over a decade ago. When I cut this out (a decade ago as well), I didn't account for walking ease, so there is a major display of leg going on when I sit. But I did cut it the length of view A. Two weeks ago, I finally sewed it, didn't like the length, eye-balled it and cut. Now it reaches just above my knees. A tad too short for me. I'm putting it in the Etsy store. No point in holding on to it. Luckily, I have enoungh of the fabric left over to make this again.

Sally at Already Pretty has this poll going on. I thought it interesting as today is my 48th birthday. I'm still waiting to feel/understand what is to be 40 or 40 something. Now I've got 50 lurking in the shadows. Twenty years ago, 48-50 meant (at least to me) that you were old and decrepit. You know, one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel. Beginning in my 30's, my style choices became less conservative. Thankfully, there are very few times in my life right now that I need to dressed conservatively. I don't wear jeans. I own neither an LBD, a white shirt nor a trenchcoat. I am finally okay with my style. Besides being a seamtress gives me the advantage of being a chameleon, so I've added a pair of jeans, the LBD and a trenchcoat to my sewing list.

This dress is made from one of the ugly fabric candidates. My dance teacher thought it would make a lovely tablecloth and napkins. Saturday, I pulled this 1995 pattern from my stash. I didn't do much except remove some of the fullness from the skirt and lengthen it. Yesterday Barbara of Germany tells me that it looks like a Spring Balenciaga. And asked if I was inspired by it. No, I wasn't. I never saw the Balenciaga until yesterday. What an uncanny resemblance. Right down to the binding placement I used. Okay, so mine is made of cotton and cost less than $10.00 to make. Balenciaga's is made of silk and goes for your monthly mortgage, a car payment or two, some groceries and a Happy Meal. Visit the link when you have a chance. Talk about inspiring. This is my first entry for the "Ugly Fabric" contest

Pattern Description: Easy to make and easy to wear, this pattern offers a simple swing silhouette interpreted with a subtly flared sleeve and back inset with feminine seaming details. The pattern is "Simple Swing Jacket" by Indygo Junction. I also got the DVD done by Nancy Zieman.

At first, the pattern of the fabric was overwhelming. I knew I wanted to make a jacket, as a kimono style coat may have been just too much. I remembered Caroline had posted about Nancy Zieman I bought the pattern and the DVD. Nancy is a great teacher. But it is best if you have some knowledge of sewing terms. It took me 3 hours to lay this out, because the print is one directional and I wanted the lion to be prominent. I especially like the "caged" effect on the back of the jacket. It just need a fabulous button and a good pressing. I will wear it with jeans and a turtleneck.

It's been a long time since I've worn a short skirt. Major scarring on my legs prevents me from doing so. But, Gabriella inspired me to create this skirt. Something about her style is a combo of sexy secretary/vintage vixen. This is my second entry in the "Ugly Fabric" contest. I started with S5259, shortened to about 3" above the knee. It looks more tapered on the model than it actually is. For the pleated attachment, I measured and joined enough 8" wide fabric to get me 2.5yds. The pattern on the fabric made the pleating easier. So lots of steam later, I attached the piece to the skirt. Make sure each section is cooled before moving onto the next, or your pleats won't be as crisp.I wanted to break up the pattern a bit so I pulled the cheetah print ribbon from my stash. Today, I am wearing it with hot pink peep toe shoes and a hot pink snake skin bag. The top is KS3378

I've entered the Ugly Fabric Contest on PatternReview. Here's what I found in my stash. Vote for your favourite and help me decide which one to enter.

#1: I think this speaks for itself, but in case it doesn't: argyle and cheetah, Pepto pink. Need I go on?

#2: From afar, they look like big polka dots, right?

#3: I liked the colour combo and it's %100 cotton. I had visions of cocktails by the pool.

#4: Tie dye, butterflies, sparkle on a knit. Was the tie dye intentional? Why?

#5: I love animal prints. But all at once?! Okay, I didn't buy this one! My sister "palmed" it off on me. All 6 yards of it. How kind.

#6: It was the animal print that got me. Can't explain about the funky checkered pattern, though. The two sisters- Poly & Ester and their cousin Doubleknit, leave something to be desired.

I originally made the McCalls dress, short with long sleeves. Last year I was attending FestAfrica and wanted something vibrant to wear, but had zero time to sew anything. I quickly removed the sleeves and added a piece of leftover fabric to the hem-look closely, you may see the join. A beautiful maxi dress was born.

The Simplicity, I made in May. I needed something to wear after the hafla, and again, I had no time. This dress went together so quickly. I didn't line nor hem it. There wasn't any time. But I think it worked out fine. I wore it again on Father's day, and received lots of compliments. I will definitely make this dress again.

One of my first recon attempts

I have always loved Elsa. Schiaparelli, that is. These are two of her designs. A long, long time ago, I attempted a recon. The jacket is from the 40's and I bought it before eBay and better adhesives came into existence. I was going for something Schiaperalli-esque. I love her work. I know most people love Chanel and I do too. But no one did embellishments like Elsa. No used zips or new materials the way she did. So, a broken beaded necklace became the "sequins". I wore the jacket for one day, before they started falling off. I used a hair dryer to remove the rest. Now, I'm looking at glue spots. What to do, what to do? I used fabric paint and painted over the spots and sewed on the ribbon trim. The jacket became Angela-esque. As we say in the West Indies, "Every spoil is a style."

February's Recession Challenge: Notions & Trim aka Aladdin's Cave

I never met a bead, button, bauble, doodad, sequin, feather, bottle or can of paint I didn't like. Kasmira's February challenge is right up my alley. I have a collection of stuff (I might be willing to part with some of it. Stay tuned.) Like Schiaparelli, I don't care for the plain and ultra-conservative. I bought these jackets, a few years ago at Target. I couldn't have sewn them for the sale price I paid. They are well made, with bound seams, workable button holes and they fit. I personalized them with trim. I haven't quite decided what to do with the green one as yet. I'm looking for something with burgundy in it. BTW-those are Chinese knot napkin rings in the lower left hand corner. I'm thinking buttons.

I spent the entire weekend sorting my patterns. I finally have a good selection of what I want to work with. But now I'm jaded. It's like decision overload. When the fashion magazines, news reports, podcasts, and yes, blogs, get to be too much I play with my paper dolls. No, I haven't cut them out, but I love to look at the pictures, in all of their simplicity. After I've visited with Schiap, Coco, Oscar and Ralph, hobnobbed with Fath, Paquin, Oleg and Rudi and enjoyed tea with the Duke and Duchess, I feel refreshed. Things look newer. Ideas become clearer. Sometimes, you have to cleanse your palette.

What happened? Sometimes a piece of fabric takes on a life of it's own. I envisioned this as a Chanel-esque cardi (circa 1920)with a longish skirt. I like the way the front draped, but the back was just too big. I tried to remove some of the fullness by darting it. Nope, she wasn't going to cooperate. Oh well, sometimes that happens. Into the refashion pile she goes. Stay tuned.

My stash reduction seems to be progressing slowly, with a few small pieces being made but it's only been a few days since I've started. I am revisiting some patterns I bought years ago. This outfit called for knits for both the top and bottom. The top required a zip. Perhaps, if I'd sewn it then I would have installed one. But we now know most knits don't require a zip. Also the top is cut like the very popular S4076. I used a sueded cotton for the skirt. I love everything about this outfit. I have about a 1.25yds of this fabric left and will make B4987 (Following caveat #3 of my previous post). This pattern is also out of print but it also had some great reviews on PatternReview.

Stash Busting or Stash Reduction?

Caroline asked how we felt about our stash. Marji ruminated on it. There are many opinions regarding this topic. I am definitely not a stash buster. Over a 25 year period, I've accumulated a lot of fabric. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. But I love them all. Acquiring a piece of cloth releases so much creativity in me that I wouldn't think of just sewing, knitting or crocheting a piece just to use it up, make room or pass it on without any feeling. Think of the time and energy you put into making an item only to be thankful it's out of you hair/space/life?

With that said, like Caroline and many of you, my stash/collection has gotten out of control. I've been paying for an off-site storage unit for a number of years to hold the overflow. That $900 a year could be used for 3 car payments or several months of groceries or 6 months of utilites or almost two years worth of mani/pedis, college books for my son, college applications. Need I go on? So one of my goals for 2009 is ...to get a smaller unit. You thought I was going to get rid of the unit, didn't you? Be reassured, I may suffer from temporary insanity when it comes to all things creative but never at the expense of my health and welfare. I like to eat and enjoy the warmth of my home.

So, I have a few caveats regarding my stash usage in 2009:

1. I must love everything I sew. Warts and all. If it's just okay, I will not alter, tweak or massage into a likable garment. I may refashion it into something else entirely. If not, I will pass it onto someone who will love it. I must feel fabulous in it.

2. It should work with my upcoming wardrobe plans. If it's going to be an orphan, it must be such a dynamic piece that in and off itself, it's great. Again, I must feel fantabuloso when I wear it!

3. If there is less than one yard of fabric leftover, it will go in a donation box that I keep in sewing area. I doubt I'll ever make a quilt, so why am I holding onto scraps? Most one yard pieces can be made into a tank top or camisole. I will try to whip one up while the machine and serger are hot! If inspiration fails me for that one yard piece, it goes in the donation box. After thirty days, the box leaves my house for good. My son is in charge of this and cannot wait. He feels I should donate everything I have in the living room.

4. Since my local fabric store is closing soon, I will keep a running list of fabrics and colours I need. This will help me control my magpie tendencies for when I do make the trek into town. Pretty, shiny, silky things can make me lose control. Causing the wants to outweigh the needs.

5. I'll monitor the fabric the crosses my threshold both ways. I have a purse size notebook where I'm listing all of my projects and fabric used. I will do a final tally at the end of each month. Currently, I don't know how much fabric I have. I did attempt stash maintenance at one time, but became overwhelmed with life crap. I mean stuff. Perhaps, this weekend, I'll try to catalogue what's in the living room and go from there.

So stash busting just to use up, make room, get rid of...not for me. Mindful stash reduction...yes, I can!

Capes and other musings-

Another UFO completed. Have you ever worn an item that wasn't quite finished? C'mon, you've worn tights with ladders (under trousers or with boots), a blouse missing a button and you've probably Scotch taped a hem or worse, staple it! It was down to the wire and I wanted to wear this animal print outfit so bad. I had envisioned that I would do S6206 (I'd made it before and loved it)but the skirt fabric was too firm for the elastic waist. What to do, what to do? I inserted a zip, sewed four darts to shape it, and serged the hem. I added the waistband tie to the top, threw on the cape I made Febo7 and walked out the door. I prayed no one would give me a close inspection. The hems weren't finished, neither was the waistband. Last night, I found it hanging on the back of my bedroom door. I spent an hour facing the waist, hemming the skirt and the sleeves. I lovingly gave her a good pressing. Now she's perfect! Ever since I saw Diana Ross in Lady Sings the Blues, I've loved capes. I try to make one a year. So yes, I've got a collection. They can be bothersome with all that fabric, but oh, the drama! These capes I made last year, when my car died. I was taking public transportation and needed something light yet warm to wear over layers. I whipped up the teal one. At the time, it was an orphan. Something in a colour that didn't match anything in my wardrobe at the time, yet was fun, striking. The cream one I made to wear on the plane to Texas. Again, light weight yet warm. They are both made from fleece and fast and easy to sew.

This top received high marks on PatternReview. It was easy to put together. I used a very stretchy velvet and could have gone down a size. Stretch velvet has a mind of its own and curls like my "kitchen" on a hot, humid day. I also lengthened the sleeves by three inches. Five would have been preferable. The next time I make this, I will extend the inside bra/modesty panel to be captured in the side seams. I am wearing it with M5238. See below for another variation.

Here's another version of the skirt. My sister bought these panels in England. Because the print is circular, she thought they may be tablecloths. But they're cordury and handpainted. It takes two panels to make this skirt. I've got two each of this brown and blue left. But how many border circle skirts do I need?

The skirt was one of my UFO's to be completed. It's a stretch khaki twill. No pattern was used to make this simple calf length, a-line (boring) wrap skirt. I made the top to jazz things up a bit. If you look closely, you'll see I added two darts because it gaped. I wore the outfit last Friday. I've put the skirt into the refashion pile. Maybe my son can draw something on it. I'll let it marinate for a while. Since I wasn't thrilled with the fit of the blouse, I removed the darts and passed it on to a friend.

This is a fave of many on PR. I don't why it took me so long to finish it. But it's done and it will work with the wardrobe I'm developing. I wore it to work on Monday.

I bought the fabric, when I bought this pattern in 1997. It's a dark brown wool with dark rust and cream pinstripes. I'd make this just the same as it appears. I'm even loving the hairdo. Okay, this goes on my 2009 stash reduction list.
